Jaco Surfing Lessons
ABOUT THE LESSON
We operate out of Jaco Beach and Hermosa Beach if you have more experience.
1. Introduction to Surfing
- Safety Briefing: Learn about ocean safety, the surf environment, and basic etiquette (such as how to avoid collisions with other surfers).
- Gear Overview: The instructor will show you how to properly use a surfboard, leash, and other equipment.
- Understanding Waves: You’ll be taught how to read the waves, including how to identify rip currents and the best spots to catch a wave.
2. Warm-Up & Stretching
- Physical Preparation: Stretching and warm-up exercises to ensure your muscles are ready for the lesson.
- Balance Training: Some schools provide balance boards or simple exercises to improve your stability on the board.
3. Surfboard Basics
- Positioning on the Board: Learn how to position yourself properly on the board, whether you’re lying down (paddling), or preparing to pop up (stand up) on a wave.
- Paddling Techniques: You’ll practice paddling effectively to catch waves.
- Stance: Depending on whether you’re regular (left foot forward) or goofy (right foot forward), you’ll work on getting into the correct stance when riding the waves.
4. Catching Waves
- Surfing the Wave: The main focus of the lesson is catching waves, learning how to position your board to catch a wave and when to pop up.
- Pop-Up Technique: This is a key skill to stand on your board. Instructors will guide you through the “pop-up” motion—getting from a lying position to standing.
5. Practice in the Water
- In-Water Experience: Depending on your level, your instructor will guide you in the water to catch small waves or practice paddling and standing.
- Feedback: Instructors will give you tips on improving your technique throughout the lesson.
6. End of Lesson Review
- Feedback and Improvement: Your instructor will go over your progress, give tips for improvement, and often provide recommendations for your next steps.
- Questions: You can ask the instructor any questions about surfing, equipment, or ocean safety.
Types of Surf Lessons:
- Private Lesson: One-on-one instruction for personalized feedback.
- Group Lesson: Lessons with multiple students, usually more affordable but less individual attention.
- Semi-Private: Small group lessons with a couple of students.
- Beginner Lessons: Focus on learning the basics, such as paddling, positioning, and standing.
- Advanced Lessons: For those already comfortable with the basics, focusing on improving technique, reading bigger waves, and advanced maneuvers.
What to Bring:
- Swimsuit: Most schools provide wetsuits if needed, but you may want to bring your own swimsuit.
- Sunscreen: It’s important to protect yourself from the sun while on the beach or in the water.
- Towel: To dry off after the lesson.
